How to Install Car Audio Wires and Cables

March 12th, 2011

How to install your wiring, and make it a.) Invisible, or b.) Nice to look at:

Alrightee! So, you’re off to installing all of the big-time components to your stereo system. I know you really really really want to skip the boring parts (like running wires), and go straight to installing the components, and turning on your system. Nnnnnno!

Like I have said countless times before, we’re here to do a QUALITY stereo install. Not some janky, lame-o quickie job. We’re installing a stereo for the life of your vehicle, and as such, we spend a little extra time to do things properly. Sooooo, when it comes to wiring, we need to think about how we want to do things first.

To re-cap. Do you know what components you’ll be installing? Even if you don’t have all of the components now, hopefully you know what your plans are. This allows you to run all of the wires, so when you finally get your components, you can just mount them, and hook up the wires, and you’re ready to rock.

Don’t be stupid like most people, and think of components first, THEN think about how to install them. Think of how to install components, get the install parts, THEN install the components. DUH!!! By the way, you’ll save time and money with this approach.

Was that a long enough introduction? OK, let’s get into what you should know about wiring!

First, buy all of the wiring that you think you’ll need, and some extra just for safety. Don’t worry, your money won’t be wasted!

Next, disassemble your vehicle in the places where the wiring will be run. When I say disassemble, I mean it! Pull out seats, carpet, panels, everything! Trust me, this will make running wires easier and safer.

If you plan to use any sort of sound insulation or damping material, now is the time to lay it. If you don’t plan on using it, why not? This will make your system sound better by lowering noise, and by eliminating vibrations. Just do it!

Now, you get to run wires. Run them everywhere they’ll be needed. Run power wires, RCA wires, speaker wires, interface wires, remote turn on wires. EVERYTHING.

Now that they’re laid out how you want and need them, it’s time to secure them. Vehicle manufacturers use ties everywhere to keep wires organized and out of the way. Now it’s your turn! Many many many people skip this step, and I don’t think it’s too smart.

Why?

Because when wires are subjected to vibrations, stress, weather, and other things that are constantly present in vehicles, they tend to wear away. When wires wear away, you get…

Short circuits!

Vehicle fires!

Ruined components!

Don’t risk it, just secure your wires!

If you have amp racks or other items that your wiring will go through, it’s time to mount those items, and secure the wiring to them.

OK, OK. Those are the basic steps you’ll go through to run wires. But, how do you actually do it? Let’s break it down:

1.) Measure distances between where components will be mounted, and what they connect to. For example, measure from the battery to where you’ll mount your amp. Also, don’t be stupid. Buy a few extra feet at each end, so you’ll have room for error. Also, you’ll want to make sure none of the wires are stretched. You want to have some slack at each end. This will make your life much easier.

Other distances to measure:

Head unit to amp

Amp to speakers

Head unit to cd/dvd changer, mp3 player, navigation system, etc.

Also, before you buy your wires, be sure you know what will work best with your planned components. If you’re planning to install a 500 watt amp, and you know that amp will be 17′ from the battery, use a chart to figure out what wire guage to use. People like to get all loco in the cabeza with power wire, and spend $5 a foot on 0 guage wire. WHY??? If you don’t need it, don’t buy it!

2.) OK, so you have all of your wiring in hand, and ready to go. Now is the time to take apart parts of your vehicle. First, figure out where your wires will be run. I usually run my power wire on the same side of the vehicle as the battery. I also usually run my RCA cables down the center of the vehicle. Knowing this information will tell you where you need to remove parts from your vehicle. If you’re not going to be running wires in a certain part of your vehicle, then it won’t be necessary to take anything apart. UNLESS!! UNLESS!!! UNLESS!!!! You plan to put some sound damping material down. I always recommend this!

So, here we go. Time for the fun part. First things first. Disconnect the ground (aka negative) wire from the battery.

Pull up panels! I highly recommend some sort of panel removal tool to remove panels. This will help protect your panels from breaking.

3.) Time to run wires!

First, we’ll run the power cable: Find a hole in the firewall of your vehicle. If you can’t find a hole, you might be able to squeeze a power cable through the far corner of your hood, by the windshield and into your vehicle that way. If you can’t do that, then you’ll have to drill. Every car is different, but one piece of advice is always true: Plan ahead, and be careful! Inspect where you plan to drill the hole, and be sure you won’t damage anything in the process. Take it slow, or if you’re feeling really nervous, drive your vehicle to a stereo shop, and have them run your power wire through the firewall. Next, run the cable wherever it will fit nicely, and not be visible once you put the carpet back in place. Run it all the way to your trunk (or wherever you plan to have your amp or distribution blocks mounted). Next, secure the cable. Use zip ties, or glue, or even velcro to make sure your power cable stays where it should. Be sure it is not near any moving parts, or rubbing on anything that will strip the insulation. Also, be sure it will not get in the way of anything once you re-install all of the panels, carpet, etc.

Next, let’s run your RCA cable(s), interface cables and Remote turn on wire. Again, be sure the negative cable is disconnected from the battery. Disassemble any and all of the panels surrounding your head unit. Pull your head unit out. Next, pull up all of the panels, consoles and carpet around where you’ll be running your RCA cable and interface cable. Connect the remote turn-on wire to your head unit’s wiring harness. If you are planning to connect more than one or two devices to your head unit’s remote turn-on, you will want to look into installing a relay. Next, run the RCA cables, interface cable and remote turn-on. All of the stuff I said earlier about power cables is also true of RCA and interface cables. Be sure your cable is not near any moving parts, it is not rubbing against anything that will strip the insulation, and it is mounted in such a way that it will not show once the panels and carpet are put back in place. Connect the RCA cables to the pre-outs on your head unit, and be sure you know which RCA cable goes to which channel on your amp. Many RCA cables use color-coding, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Plug in your interface cable. Now, re-install your head unit. Make sure everything is all hooked up before you put everything back together!!

OK, last step. Let’s run speaker wire! This is exactly like running all of the other wires above. Pull up the panels. Run the wires. Be mindful of where you plan to run them. Secure them. Make sure you have a few extra feet at each end of the speaker cable. I know this sounds stupid, but trust me. It’s more stupid to spend all of this time running wire only to discover that it’s too short. Then, you have to pull the wire up, throw it away, then run it all over again. DUMB!

4.) Secure wires!

Now that your wires are run, it’s time to secure them. There are many ways to secure wires, and not all of them will work at all times. In fact, you’ll probably need to use a variety of methods to secure your wires throughout your vehicle. Soooooo….

1.) Secure wires with zip ties to other bundles of wires.

2.) Secure wires with zip ties to small holes (or create small holes)

3.) Use glue to secure zip ties to your vehicle, then secure the wires with them.

4.) Run wires behind objects that they can be secured to.

5.) Use velcro to secure wires

5.) Secure wires to mounting locations (amp racks, speaker pods, etc)

If you have any sort of custom enclosure or rack for your stereo components, you’ll want to find a way to secure your wires to the rack or enclosure. If these racks or enclosures are designed to be seen, you might want to take some time making the wires visible, and looking good.

In the example of amp racks, you can drill holes where all of the electrical connections go into the amp. Run the wires through these holes, and to your amp. This trick will make your wires look nice and clean, and keep your wires organized.

For speaker enclosures, there are a variety of things you can do to make the wires look good. For plexiglass subwoofer enclosures, people often choose wire that looks good. In addition, top installers will choose wire hardware (terminals) that are of high quality, and look good. If you want your enclosure to be removable, you can install speaker terminals on the outside of the enclosure, or even install a custom quick-release wiring harness.

Enjoy!

The Proper Way to Handle Your Paint Gun For Car Spray-Painting Jobs

March 7th, 2011

For those that have an interest in cars it’s their first priority to keep the car in top running condition. At the first whisper of a banging or knocking up goes the hood to see what’s amiss. Then if the problem is found out come the tools and the repairs are made. If all, else fails and the cause can’t be found then off to the mechanics shop it goes. Aside from this, the car gets regular cleaning and scheduled cleaning.

If you own a spray gun then in deserves the same care as you give your car. Obviously, you are using your spray gun to paint and coat cars with so if you want the best for your car then give the best to your gun.

You spray gun has three aspects aside from the proper use. There is cleaning, maintenance and repair. You need to know when and how these three operations have to be carried out.

Cleaning:

The first time you put your gun away dirty you most likely have caused some form of irreparable damage. Many facilities now are being forced to use enclosed gun washers. Even if you are only using your spray gun as a hobbyist, it is still best to follow whatever the basic industry regulations are as they are normally put into place for your safety and the safety of others.

If you are using one of these enclosed washers then make sure you follow all the instructions that came with it. You will probably read that your gun should never be left it the cleaning unit for more than 60 seconds at time.

Don’t just put your gun in there and come back hours later. The effects would be the same as soaking your gun in thinner and that’s not something you want to be doing. Just as you have to clean your gun, you have to clean your washer as well. Be sure to clean the solvent regularly.

If you overuse it condensation begins to build up and this causes acids. These can be just as bad for your gun as dried paint is. In addition, the debris in the dirty solvent will damage your gun as well. Don’t let the solvents get into the airways of the gun either and be sure to dry the gun when you take it out of the solvent.

Maintenance:

By properly checking your gun prior to each use you are going to get the best performance from it. If you don’t and you get a big spatter on that panel you are painting then you have just made a whole lot of new work for yourself. To keep you gun in top shape lubricate it. If you use it daily then oil it daily. Pay special attention to the packing because this is the area that dries out.

Repairs:

Don’t try to fix it yourself. Let the professionals do the job but you can certainly help by telling them exactly what the problem is so they can identify the areas that need their attention quickly.

Reviews of the Different Types of Car iPod Adapters

February 18th, 2011

When it comes to connecting your iPod to your car, there are many options. Wireless FM transmitters, Wired FM Modulators, Dedicated iPod interfaces, and aftermarket radios with iPod control are the four most popular options. Each of these iPod adapters have their applications and they all have their strong and weak points. This article will review each of the iPod adapters.

Wireless FM Transmitter Review:

When it comes to interfacing your iPod to your car, a wireless FM transmitter is the easiest option and it will work with just about 100% of the cars on the road. This iPod adapter works by transmitting the audio signal from your iPod to your factory radio wirelessly. Out of all the iPod adapters this is the easiest one to install. The better ones just plug into your car’s cigarette lighter and then to the iPod. Once connected, all you have to do is tune you car’s radio to a certain station to hear the songs from your iPod. This iPod adapter is extremely easy to install and not very expensive, but it does have some flaws.

Most of the time you will experience static in teh background of the music. Also, the audio may drift in and out, getting louder and softer. Another flaw of this iPod adapter is that the FCC regulates the output power of the wireless transmitter. If you live in an area that has strong radio stations, the radio stations will over power the transmitter and you will hear the radio stations behind your music.

Wired FM Modulator Review:

Even though a wired FM modulator is a little harder to install than a wireless FM transmitter, it is well worth it. Wired FM modulators work on the same premise as a wireless FM transmitter, but it connects directly to your car’s factory antenna. I does not only connect directly to the antenna, it also isolates the antenna from the radio. By isolating the antenna from the radio, it does not allow strong radio stations to bleed through the iPod’s audio. Wired FM modulators also are universal and work on just about 100% of the cars on the road, but installation is required. On most cars the factory radio needs to be removed in order to plug the FM modulator into the antenna, but like I said before, it is worth it. This iPod adapter has the ability to give you clear, static free audio that does not drift and has no radio station bleed through.

Dedicated iPod Interface Review:

If you have your heart set on keeping you factory radio, your best option is a dedicated iPod interface. Like the wired FM modulator it does require installation. Unlike the wired FM modulator it is not universal and only works on select vehicles. The installation usually consists of removing your factory radio and plugging the dedicated iPod interface into the CD Changer/Satellite radio port. This port allows the adapter to control the iPod from the radio’s controls. Also, the audio quality is extremely good and there will be no static or interference. Plus a dedicated iPod interface will plug into the bottom of your iPod and charge it. If your car has the provisions for one, this is that type of iPod adapter that I would recommend.

Aftermarket Radio With iPod Control Review:

Most factory radio’s are not designed to control an iPod. Aftermarket companies backwards engineer devices to connect to an iPod. If you have no problem changing your radio, I would recommend installing an aftermarket radio with iPod control. These radios are designed from the ground up to control an iPod. They will allow you to quickly and easily navigate through your songs right off the radio while providing you with crystal clear audio. Like a dedicated iPod interface, it also will charge your iPod. This is your absolute best option for listening to your iPod in your car.

Choosing an iPod adapter may be difficult. Hopefully these reviews shined some light on the different types of iPod adapters and their applications.

Hot Car Audio Accessories

February 14th, 2011

A car should be a very comfortable place and the distance covered when in the car should be entertaining to at least keep the driver awake and the passengers entertained. To make any journey in your car exciting and entertaining, the addition of audio accessories to the car does the trick.

An iPod system is a great solution when it comes to music and it is a great gift for the driver and the passengers. It adds spice to the docking station as it is engineered to produce high quality sound. In addition to that, an iPod is easy to use, giving the user an easy time when operating it. An excellent choice would be one which can play music and display photos on the vehicle monitor. A remote control is the best gadget to use in operating an iPod as it makes the operation of the accessory much easier. It is also important to add an FM tuner for the iPod for quality music.

Another great accessory for a car is an iPod nano. It serves as a great endowment for a car user and has better features compared with the conventional iPod. This is due to the fact that the iPod nano has the ability to save music which one can hear while in a car, allowing the user to listen to his or her preferred music. Apart from that, it can also store pod casts, photographs, audio books and amazingly, even games. What better way to enjoy your journey experience other than that? This is a good gift to any one on board considering its large storage capacity which allows one to save ample entertainment for the journey.

HD radio is one to consider when one is a fan of sports news, live talk shows and even music. This device provides channel reception that is free from static. In addition, the HD radio delivers high quality listening to the audience, a quality that lacks in most conventional radios. However, for better reception, it is advisable to get a receiver for it.

When one needs to search through more than 100 radio stations while on a a journey, the XM satellite tuner for the radio is a great option. Digital devices are the in thing nowadays and this device offers nothing less than that.

The answer to a simple of way of adding extra components to a car system is the media controllers for the audio system. Instead of expanding the car audio system through modification of the whole system, this device is the way to go as it allows for expansion including the addition of CD changers, cell phone accessories and even satellite radios without any modifications or adjusting the dashboard. It is advisable to add a meter to level the sound as it aids in setting sound accurately for each speaker.

A surge protector is the most important as it prevents damage to the accessories due to voltage fluctuations. The overall advantage of most car accessories is their ability to function in different environments, including in houses.

Car Audio Systems

February 8th, 2011

It is hard to imagine an automobile without an audio system. Car audio systems are important to all car owners and a mind boggling range is available to choose from. A car audio system is a combination of components such as head units, amplifiers, speakers, and auxiliary input devices. All of these work to complement each other and have no meaning on a stand-alone basis.

The head unit of a system is like the brain and central processing unit. Control and tuning of the volume, bass, equalizer, etc., is done through this unit. There are different kinds of head units. Some allow you to play only tapes, CDs or the radio, while others allow all of these choices. Advanced devices can also hold many CDs at a time and allow shuttling between them. Speakers are obviously important if we want to hear anything. However, different kinds are available, like cone or ribbon type. All have their own advantages. The placement of speakers also makes a difference. Then there are amplifiers, which amplify or increase signals to make them audible. They too are available in different configurations, like mono, stereo or multi-channel.

Car audio systems can range from basic to very high end and funky models. A basic system costs less and can have good sound quality if components are of a standard make. Some decisions also depend on intended use. If you feel that you do not require a tape player but a CD player, then invest in a good-quality CD player rather than a cheap combination. For a basic system, you can go for only front speakers and avoid rear ones. Advanced models are available in compact sizes, with or without remote control and all other features one can imagine.

Depending on your budget and personal preferences, you can self-assemble a unit or buy an all-in-one system. Branded ones may be costlier but come with a guarantee and are easy to service. For some things like speakers, it is advisable to buy from standard, reliable and tested manufactures. If sound quality is low or harsh, then money saved is also wasted.

MP3 Players and Cars – How to Stream Music Through Your Car’s Stereo Into Your iPod FM Transmitters

January 31st, 2011

When it comes to playing your iPod through your car’s speakers you often run into some common problems. Typically, there is not a dock installed on your stereo that will accept your iPod or MP3 player. Fortunately, you do have a few options to solve this problem, and each has its own limitations. Solutions include FM transmitters, cassette adapters, wired FM modulators, stereos with an inline ports, or RCA ports. Some will have much better quality sound, while others will sound static and choppy. It is this author’s intention to discuss the benefits and limitations of all these possible options.

Your simplest and cheapest choice is using an FM transmitter. There are two types of FM transmitters: wired and wireless. Basically, a wired one connects to your car, while a wireless uses radio frequency to play through the car stereo. The basic function of these devices is that you run plug from your iPod and pick up a signal from your car’s radio stations. The frequency allotted is very low and will only work for stations between 88.1 FM – 107.9FM. Any other station will not pick up the sound coming through the FM transmitter.

It is possible to increase the stations available, but the FCC rules and regulations for radio will not allow it. The FCC will not allow FM transmitters to broadcast over 18.75 nanowatts, ensuring that they will not work well. Essentially, you are creating your own low-wattage radio station. Unfortunately you are competing with major radio stations that are pushing out 6,000 + watts of music. This can cause the MP3 player and radio station to mix together into a distorted mess. One of the most popular types of FM Transmitters is the Belkin TuneCast II.

It is strong, versatile, and can pick up many radio frequencies clearly. FM Transmitters, although providing clean, listenable sound, may not approach that standard hailed by music purists. As such, it may not be the ideal solution for audiophiles. FM radio stations will never sound the same as a CD or your MP3 player does. Luckily, these go for around $30 a piece making this a popular choice.

When shopping for your FM transmitter you want to look to see if it is battery operated or plugs into your car’s cigarette adapter. Both work well, but plugging it into your car’s cigarette adapter allows for your iPod charging while playing music. Cigarette lighter adapters will sometimes come with a cradle. A cradle is a nice way to hold your MP3 player and charge it simultaneously. Accessory Genie makes a Flex Pod FM transmitter that has a cradle with a flexible neck allowing for more customization.

Newer transmitters have PSL technology; positive station delivers quality sound and reduces drift as you travel from city to city. Most, if not all the newer versions have LCD screens showing what station you should tune into. Others like the Road Master Corp include a remote control for the ultimate ease and control.

Another option is to purchase an audio cassette adapter for your iPod. Basically, there is a cord that plugs into your MP3 players headphone jack and leads to a cassette. You insert the cassette into your car’s cassette player (if it has one) and off you go. The downside is not many cars have cassette players anymore. The sound quality is much better than that of a wired FM transmitter because there is no interference from the other radio stations. Sony cassette adapters are very cheap as well, costing as little as $10 from Philips or another major brand.

A wired FM modulator eliminates passing through the cluttered radio airwaves when playing your iPod’s music. They intercept the radio waves from your antenna and radio. It only requires minimal installation, replacing a wire in back of your car stereo’s antenna. Then you can run the wire into your MP3 player’s headphone jack. It is much simpler than it sounds and takes about 5 minutes to install.

The modulator is versatile, running on any FM frequency. It is better to choose a station near the beginning or end of the FM station frequency range. Crutchfield has a large selection of wired FM modulators. There is much less noise and zero interference from the radio stations using the FM modulator. They are inexpensive, typically costing around $15 for a decent model from Crutchfield or some other electronics stores.

The simplest and easiest to install would be the car stereo with an inline port included. Most of the newer model cars have this feature. It is a small jack that is on your car radio. Simply insert the wire into the iPods headphone jack and the other end of the wire goes into the stereo’s line-in jack. Set your stereo to Auxiliary and you are ready to hear some quality MP3 sound. If your car does not have the line-in port you can purchase a new stereo with this jack for $100. Buying a new radio simply for the line-in jack is wasteful and not the optimal solution for people on a budget.

New car stereos, primarily those with a CD player, have an RCA port in the back of them. You can run a wire through the MP3 player’s headphone jack straight into the RCA port. You can purchase an RCA-to-headphone jack cord for a few bucks at any electronics store. These cables come in different sizes and lengths, depending on your car’s stereo and how far it is located from you.

Ask your local electronics store what size and length is right for your car’s stereo. To install this you must remove your radio and locate the red and white inputs on the backside. Plug the wires into the RCA port and your car will play perfect sounding music though your iPod or MP3 player. All you need to do now is tune your radio to “CD” or “Auxiliary” and away you go.

Remember there are many options for your iPod or MP3 player and knowing what your budget is and what features your car stereo has can help you make an informed decision. You also must make sure that your MP3 player is compatible with your product the new iPhone 3G are not compatible with older model FM transmitters. There may be more than one optimal choice, which is why it is up to you to go to your electronics shop and make sure you are getting what you need.

Car Video Systems – Entertainment on Wheels

January 28th, 2011

Car video systems are the best ways of keeping yourself when waiting in your car for someone or when you are stuck in traffic for a long time. Just pop a DVD in the tray and you are on your way to watch the movie you’ve been dying to catch for a long time. Car video systems can be mounted on the dashboard or on the ceiling of the car and can be configured according to the user’s requirements. Most car video systems come bundled with wireless headphones for undisturbed enjoyment.

The following points need to be kept in mind when choosing a car video system.

1. Position of installation – Make sure the system is installed in a position where the monitor is easy to view. The ceiling is probably a good idea, but make sure the front row passenger(s) and driver have good visibility. Wherever you install it, make sure it is securely mounted. You don’t need an “unsecured flying object” in the car in case you have to hit an emergency brake.

2. Availability of power – Video systems with attached amplifiers, woofers and subwoofers often guzzle power. Make sure your charging system is beefy enough to keep the power supply up. Otherwise, choose a system with low power absorption.

3. Bonus utilities – Video systems these days often come bundled with Bluetooth and iPod integration systems.
