Car Wash operators are always looking for ways in which to both cut costs and save time. Most new Car Wash facilities start with both a monitoring system and a video surveillance system from day one. Many existing facilities are seeing the need to create accountability for not just criminals, customers, and employees. Monitoring systems keep honest people honest and helps eliminate shrinkage as well.

Video Surveillance – Be aware when your not there.

Car Wash operators already know the value of having a digital record of what happens at their wash when they are not there and when employees ARE there. Having cameras in each bay that can be viewed from the comfort of your home office can help you sleep better at night knowing all is safe and secure. Modern camera systems are now accessible through a Internet connection at your wash which puts you one click away from seeing your facility.

Settling Customer Disputes

A second value in getting a video system is in an instance in which a customer makes a false damage claim. “Your machine dented the side of my car, you need to pay to get it fixed!” is a common thing heard by a wash operator. These instances are quickly put to rest when an operator can show footage of the vehicle (already damaged) when they drove in onto the lot. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the worth of 10 seconds of video footage!

Capturing Crimes of Smashin’ on Video

Having quality video footage can help you work closely with local law enforcement to catch destructive vandals and would-be thieves as they destroy your wash equipment in order to get at the money inside. Most DVR equipment can be wired directly into your alarm system which upon triggering an alarm all cameras can begin to record at full resolution in order to have a better chance at getting the footage needed to convict.

Car Wash Monitoring – The Secret of the All-Stars

The most successful Car Wash operations rely heavily on their Car Wash monitoring system to keep them well-informed about the health and wealth of their wash business. Information is the most powerful tool that a business owner can have to help make informed decisions. Car Wash owners and operators that have monitoring systems are able to maintain a higher degree of control over their entire wash operation.

It’s a Coin Changer, not an ATM

One of the big loss-leaders at a Car Wash facility is uncounted money from changer units. One dishonest employee that had been caught told the investigator that the change machines were just like an ATM that was never counted. Many wash operators report that they have been the target of theft involving stringing scams or stolen credit cards that wipes them out of their coins and tokens. Car Wash monitoring equipment can detect these types of crimes in the act and simultaneously cut power to the changer, send a text message to the wash owner, and turn on a video camera wired into the security system. Even employee theft will drop to zero when every coin, token, and bill is accounted for throughout the wash facility.

Never Run Out of Chemical

A huge benefit of a Car Wash monitoring system is that you can make certain that the main tanks never run out of chemical. You can configure your sensors to alert your wash manager and your chemical distributor with a text message and an email when a monitored tank starts running low. This saves you money on rush service calls for chemical fills and delivery. This saves chemical distributors the time it takes to send a driver around on their route the ‘check’ chemical levels. Wash owners that never have to worry about running out of chemical before a busy weekend means they never have to worry about the associated losses of having to turn away business. Now you can go on vacation and know that if chemical runs low your chemical distributor is also sent the same text message and will have a delivery sent out without you even making the call.

Your Evening Status Report Delivered

Wash owners with Car Wash monitoring equipment tell me that they sleep easier at night because every evening they get a text message to their phone that gives them their car counts, daily totals, cash counts, credit card counts, and loyalty card counts. Knowing whether you hit your number for the day was never possible before monitoring systems were installed. The following morning a followup text message arrives to the wash owners phone while sipping a cup of coffee with the full report for the previous day.

Monitoring Makes Investors Happy

dFor wash businesses that have investors or would like to attract potential investors will be pleased to know that having a remote monitoring system is exactly what the doctor ordered. Investors want to be getting regular reports on how the investment is doing. Since monitoring equipment tracks all revenue including cash it makes it easy for investors to remain the silent partner and allow wash operators to do their day to day operations without being bogged down with regular progress reports and financial updates. Consider how you can get more done during the day if your most of your paperwork was automated by a monitoring system?

Learn from Your Mistakes – Historical Trends

Monitoring systems are powered by powerful software that can compare months against previous months or the same time period the year before. By looking at weather data, car counts, and pricing at the time you can help identify trends and business growth or loss. The reason monitoring systems play such a large role in a successful wash operation is that wash owners are able to find out where the loss leaders are early on before it can largely impact overall revenue. Just as important as knowing when something is wrong, monitoring lets you know when things are going right. The key to growth is to identify what works and replicate those efforts. Many wash operators have told me that with the assistance of their monitoring system that they learned that they were not charging enough. Bobby Willis of Cool Wave Car Wash says that if you have more than 20% of your customers buying the top wash package your not charging enough. How valuable would it be to know whether or not your leaving money on the table?

Catch the Small Problems before they become BIG Problems

Lastly, if not most importantly monitoring systems can tell you when there are issues at the wash. Error codes from entry stations, faulty equipment errors, doors that stay open in the winter and won’t close, and any number of other potentially disastrous problems. Monitoring systems are invaluable for a wash operator that wants to operate lean and make the most out of the equipment that they have. As any vehicle owner can tell you, it’s better to catch a problem early on before you end up replacing entire engines or having to get a whole new vehicle all together. Ignorance is not bliss and running a business in the dark is no means to run a business at all. Whether your building a new facility or have an existing site – wash monitoring and video surveillance may be exactly what you’ve been looking for because if you aren’t, employees and criminals looking to rip you off certainly are.

We all know that brand names matter when purchasing car audio hardware. There are brands that are surely more reputable than others. When you are at the store and they offer choice after choice after choice, suddenly you feel overwhelmed on what really to buy. But you can be assured of one thing, if they offer you an Alpine car stereo you can’t go wrong with it.

Alpine car stereo and electronics, founded in 1978, is a world leader in the industry of high performance mobile electronics. They specialize in mobile multimedia, an integrated system approach incorporating digital entertainment, security and navigation products for the mobile entertainment.

Alpine car stereos are a new breed of units which feature the convergence of high performance audio, video, navigation and telematics in the form of Mobile Multimedia. Navigation systems act as the resource

center of the Alpine car stereo Mobile Multimedia lineup. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), DVD players, Dolby Digital systems, satellite digital audio radio, mobile data linking and communication

through telematics devices will be fused with navigation systems to create a platform of products. Mobile Multimedia integrates Alpine’s innovative audio, video, security and navigation products, as well as

its new GUI for Drivers, human interface and information communications technology.

To grasp what the Alpine car stereo Mobile Multimedia is, take a look at the IVA-D901 Alpine car stereo Mobile Multimedia Station/CD/DVD Receiver/Ai-NET Controller. The IVA-D901 has 400% more pixels than a conventional in-vehicle display, meaning that it has 1.15 million pixel elements. It has 50W x 4 built-in power and 3 PreOuts (4 volt), SAT Radio ready, a Hard Disc Drive (HDD), and Alpine car stereo Navigation. Key features include:

- Bass Engine® Plus

- Subwoofer Level Control

- Bass Center Frequency Control

- Bass Band Width Adjustment

- CD Text, Text Display, Text Scroll

- M DAC

- MaxTune SQ Tuner

- 3 Auxilliary A/V Inputs with Remote Control Input

- Dedicated Navigation Input

- Dedicated Camera Input

- 2 Auxilliary Monitor A/V Outputs

- Navigation Audio Mix

- 3 PreOuts (4 volt)

A significant part of your entire car audio system consists of just wires. There are all kinds of cables and wires involved in installing a car audio system. You have power wires, speaker wires, amplifier cables, power capacitors, and what not. It is always better to be equipped with at least the basics before you go in for car audio installation.

The power wire is an important part of the amplifier installation. Select the proper gauge and fusing. A proper gauge prevents the amplifier from being choked off by the size limitations of the wire. Choose power wires with lots of strands, so that they are easier to install and don’t break while passing through the numerous corners of the car. The jacket of the wire should be of a material, which can resist chemicals like oil and battery acids, which can wreak havoc on substandard wires.

You can go for wires with large number of strands for the car audio speaker wires. The jacket is not that important in this case, because the speaker is not placed in regions where it could encounter chemicals, as in the case of power wires. Oxygen free copper wiring is always recommended for car audio speaker wires. The size of the speaker wiring depends on the power going in to your speakers and the total length between the amplifier and the speakers.

Signal cables are otherwise known as RCA cables and assume importance for their noise rejection properties. Try and go in for a quality RCA cable, which would ensure trouble free performance in the long run. It is recommended that you go in for “twisted pair” cables. They are better at noise reduction. Needless to say, the quality of wires connecting car audio power capacitors and batteries should also be good.

One can find extensive information on car audio wiring by visiting online resources on the subject. Perhaps car audio professionals are best placed to offer you great advice on car audio wiring.

Toyota electric cars are ahead of the curve most of the time. Now is no exception. Let’s take a look at the history of the Prius.

Over ten years ago auto makers were subjected to market pressures that basically killed the electric car movement. If you need more information on that, see the “Who Killed the Electric Car” video documentary.

After the EV battle was lost, there was some interesting fallout. Japanese auto makers were forced to abdicate their expertise and finally production of full EV Ni-MH battery packs. This is evidenced by the sudden end of production of the Toyota RAV4 EV. The SUV still today, ten years later, commonly sells for $20,000 – $30,000! That is how incredibly well the vehicle was built.

Toyota however made a genius move. It produced the Toyota Prius Hybrid. This worked in several ways.

First, Toyota could leverage their battery expertise. The new Prius still uses a 1.6 kWh Nickel Metal Hydride battery similar to the one installed in 2004. The company has manufactured literally millions of these packs. There’s your profit margin.

Second, the size of battery pack is optimal. Batteries are expensive. So, they kept the battery pack small. If you notice that a Prius size car might use up say 200 watt hours per mile. 1.6 kWh is 1600 watt hours. The car is going to go 1600/200 = 8 miles max on battery power. If you want to power the car on battery power only, you need a much larger and more expensive battery.

Toyota cut the battery size and cost to the quick. Since the resulting car still used gasoline, this kept the oil companies from further legal actions. It allowed Toyota to maintain a hand in EV manufacture and expertise and at the same time lowered the cost of the resulting car a whole lot. The company can still claim green, customers can feel all eco, and many cars are sold. This is sheer genius, marketing Aikido.

The next generation of Toyota electric cars remains to be seen. At auto shows in the past couple of years the company has been rolling out a futuristic looking drive by wire rig called the FT EV. This style of the car has been described as “Steampunk”.

Production of the Ft-EV has been stated as 2012. However, very few specifications beyond a range of about 55 miles and speed of 60mph/100kph are available. It makes one wonder how serious Toyota is about producing the car.

Finally we see that Toyota may be working on electric car technology that could revolutionize the market if they are correct.

The company claims it may well be able to effectively produce a Hydrogen powered EV for $50,000 USD by the year 2015. If this is true, and Lithium battery technology has not improved 4 or 5 fold in energy density/storage by that time, Toyota may once again be making millions of vehicles nobody saw coming.

Video games have been getting a bad rap. Sure, a few involve nothing more than pointing several deadly weapons at the Undead and blasting them into a bajillion pieces. And there are cases of people wasting otherwise productive hours conquering a virtual kingdom and accumulating pixelized gold instead of going out and getting a real job.

But there are many, many times when video games actually provide a noble purpose in society. When they make you a better person. Or at least, a smarter person.

Because there are video games that are actually built on logic and reasoning, and involve complex problem solving that you can take with you even after you’ve walked away from the computer screen.

Take Tetris. Okay, so it’s a couple of colored blocks set against a metallic, monotonous sound track – but it takes some degree of analysis and quick thinking to assess the shape of the pieces dropping from the top of the screen and deciding where to put it. Factor in that the game speeds up periodically, and the pile of blocks grows with every mistake you make, until you reach a point when one wrong move can kill your chances of breaking the world record–and your brain starts working pretty fast. Faster, in fact, than you would normally use it in the course of the day; admit it, most of the stuff you do at the office is pretty mind numbing, anyway. Between sharpening pencils and performing lightning-fast spatial analysis exercises, Tetris looks like it’s actually good for you.

And then there are the memory games. Ever spent 20 minutes looking for your keys? Or stood at the center of the parking lot, trying to remember if you parked on the same floor? Well, memory games can work that brain muscle so you don’t forget the important stuff (and yes, that includes your wedding anniversary). Studies show that memory isn’t really a function of IQ; it’s a skill: the ability to organize information in your brain, and then retrieve it through a series of memory-triggers. Not all of this is conscious (although you can take active steps to improve memory by researching on what methods you can use). But like all skills, it improves with use. Hence, memory games. The best part about memory games is that they’re actually fun (as opposed to simply memorizing a list of the capitals of each state, or the periodic table of elements) and even relaxing. Yes, relaxing. You’re doing something you love and getting smarter at the same time. Not a bad way to spend a 20 minute break between meetings.

And then there are the strategy games. Conquering the world, running a city, shaping an empire from a handful of barbarian villages to being the first country to set up a space station on Mars–obviously, these aren’t just random point and shoot games. They’re about the same skills you learn in business school, but with cooler graphics: how to manage resources, motivate people, and set goals.

So yes, video games can make you smart. Tell that to Mom next time she tells you to hit the books.

Resources.eu.com is an online resource centre covering many topics including Games and Kids and video games.

How to install your wiring, and make it a.) Invisible, or b.) Nice to look at:

Alrightee! So, you’re off to installing all of the big-time components to your stereo system. I know you really really really want to skip the boring parts (like running wires), and go straight to installing the components, and turning on your system. Nnnnnno!

Like I have said countless times before, we’re here to do a QUALITY stereo install. Not some janky, lame-o quickie job. We’re installing a stereo for the life of your vehicle, and as such, we spend a little extra time to do things properly. Sooooo, when it comes to wiring, we need to think about how we want to do things first.

To re-cap. Do you know what components you’ll be installing? Even if you don’t have all of the components now, hopefully you know what your plans are. This allows you to run all of the wires, so when you finally get your components, you can just mount them, and hook up the wires, and you’re ready to rock.

Don’t be stupid like most people, and think of components first, THEN think about how to install them. Think of how to install components, get the install parts, THEN install the components. DUH!!! By the way, you’ll save time and money with this approach.

Was that a long enough introduction? OK, let’s get into what you should know about wiring!

First, buy all of the wiring that you think you’ll need, and some extra just for safety. Don’t worry, your money won’t be wasted!

Next, disassemble your vehicle in the places where the wiring will be run. When I say disassemble, I mean it! Pull out seats, carpet, panels, everything! Trust me, this will make running wires easier and safer.

If you plan to use any sort of sound insulation or damping material, now is the time to lay it. If you don’t plan on using it, why not? This will make your system sound better by lowering noise, and by eliminating vibrations. Just do it!

Now, you get to run wires. Run them everywhere they’ll be needed. Run power wires, RCA wires, speaker wires, interface wires, remote turn on wires. EVERYTHING.

Now that they’re laid out how you want and need them, it’s time to secure them. Vehicle manufacturers use ties everywhere to keep wires organized and out of the way. Now it’s your turn! Many many many people skip this step, and I don’t think it’s too smart.

Why?

Because when wires are subjected to vibrations, stress, weather, and other things that are constantly present in vehicles, they tend to wear away. When wires wear away, you get…

Short circuits!

Vehicle fires!

Ruined components!

Don’t risk it, just secure your wires!

If you have amp racks or other items that your wiring will go through, it’s time to mount those items, and secure the wiring to them.

OK, OK. Those are the basic steps you’ll go through to run wires. But, how do you actually do it? Let’s break it down:

1.) Measure distances between where components will be mounted, and what they connect to. For example, measure from the battery to where you’ll mount your amp. Also, don’t be stupid. Buy a few extra feet at each end, so you’ll have room for error. Also, you’ll want to make sure none of the wires are stretched. You want to have some slack at each end. This will make your life much easier.

Other distances to measure:

Head unit to amp

Amp to speakers

Head unit to cd/dvd changer, mp3 player, navigation system, etc.

Also, before you buy your wires, be sure you know what will work best with your planned components. If you’re planning to install a 500 watt amp, and you know that amp will be 17′ from the battery, use a chart to figure out what wire guage to use. People like to get all loco in the cabeza with power wire, and spend $5 a foot on 0 guage wire. WHY??? If you don’t need it, don’t buy it!

2.) OK, so you have all of your wiring in hand, and ready to go. Now is the time to take apart parts of your vehicle. First, figure out where your wires will be run. I usually run my power wire on the same side of the vehicle as the battery. I also usually run my RCA cables down the center of the vehicle. Knowing this information will tell you where you need to remove parts from your vehicle. If you’re not going to be running wires in a certain part of your vehicle, then it won’t be necessary to take anything apart. UNLESS!! UNLESS!!! UNLESS!!!! You plan to put some sound damping material down. I always recommend this!

So, here we go. Time for the fun part. First things first. Disconnect the ground (aka negative) wire from the battery.

Pull up panels! I highly recommend some sort of panel removal tool to remove panels. This will help protect your panels from breaking.

3.) Time to run wires!

First, we’ll run the power cable: Find a hole in the firewall of your vehicle. If you can’t find a hole, you might be able to squeeze a power cable through the far corner of your hood, by the windshield and into your vehicle that way. If you can’t do that, then you’ll have to drill. Every car is different, but one piece of advice is always true: Plan ahead, and be careful! Inspect where you plan to drill the hole, and be sure you won’t damage anything in the process. Take it slow, or if you’re feeling really nervous, drive your vehicle to a stereo shop, and have them run your power wire through the firewall. Next, run the cable wherever it will fit nicely, and not be visible once you put the carpet back in place. Run it all the way to your trunk (or wherever you plan to have your amp or distribution blocks mounted). Next, secure the cable. Use zip ties, or glue, or even velcro to make sure your power cable stays where it should. Be sure it is not near any moving parts, or rubbing on anything that will strip the insulation. Also, be sure it will not get in the way of anything once you re-install all of the panels, carpet, etc.

Next, let’s run your RCA cable(s), interface cables and Remote turn on wire. Again, be sure the negative cable is disconnected from the battery. Disassemble any and all of the panels surrounding your head unit. Pull your head unit out. Next, pull up all of the panels, consoles and carpet around where you’ll be running your RCA cable and interface cable. Connect the remote turn-on wire to your head unit’s wiring harness. If you are planning to connect more than one or two devices to your head unit’s remote turn-on, you will want to look into installing a relay. Next, run the RCA cables, interface cable and remote turn-on. All of the stuff I said earlier about power cables is also true of RCA and interface cables. Be sure your cable is not near any moving parts, it is not rubbing against anything that will strip the insulation, and it is mounted in such a way that it will not show once the panels and carpet are put back in place. Connect the RCA cables to the pre-outs on your head unit, and be sure you know which RCA cable goes to which channel on your amp. Many RCA cables use color-coding, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Plug in your interface cable. Now, re-install your head unit. Make sure everything is all hooked up before you put everything back together!!

OK, last step. Let’s run speaker wire! This is exactly like running all of the other wires above. Pull up the panels. Run the wires. Be mindful of where you plan to run them. Secure them. Make sure you have a few extra feet at each end of the speaker cable. I know this sounds stupid, but trust me. It’s more stupid to spend all of this time running wire only to discover that it’s too short. Then, you have to pull the wire up, throw it away, then run it all over again. DUMB!

4.) Secure wires!

Now that your wires are run, it’s time to secure them. There are many ways to secure wires, and not all of them will work at all times. In fact, you’ll probably need to use a variety of methods to secure your wires throughout your vehicle. Soooooo….

1.) Secure wires with zip ties to other bundles of wires.

2.) Secure wires with zip ties to small holes (or create small holes)

3.) Use glue to secure zip ties to your vehicle, then secure the wires with them.

4.) Run wires behind objects that they can be secured to.

5.) Use velcro to secure wires

5.) Secure wires to mounting locations (amp racks, speaker pods, etc)

If you have any sort of custom enclosure or rack for your stereo components, you’ll want to find a way to secure your wires to the rack or enclosure. If these racks or enclosures are designed to be seen, you might want to take some time making the wires visible, and looking good.

In the example of amp racks, you can drill holes where all of the electrical connections go into the amp. Run the wires through these holes, and to your amp. This trick will make your wires look nice and clean, and keep your wires organized.

For speaker enclosures, there are a variety of things you can do to make the wires look good. For plexiglass subwoofer enclosures, people often choose wire that looks good. In addition, top installers will choose wire hardware (terminals) that are of high quality, and look good. If you want your enclosure to be removable, you can install speaker terminals on the outside of the enclosure, or even install a custom quick-release wiring harness.

Enjoy!
